A Cause of Damage to Optical Glass in the Tropics
نویسنده
چکیده
Deterioration of the glass of microscope objectives, telescope lenses, prisms and expensive optical glass of all kinds has always been a source of worry to those using optical apparatus in the tropics. Many theories have been advanced to explain this damage, but as far as is known few, if any, of these have ever been definitely proved. In the present investigation, one cause of the clouding of prisms has been definitely established, and a remedy has been suggested. The work is not complete and further research on the lines indicated below will probably produce fresh facts, but it is felt that the matter is of such importance that these notes should be published even in their present state of incompleteness. Certain prisms were submitted to the writer with a request for an explanation for the clouding of their polished surfaces, which recurred

Experimental Investigation of Subsurface Damages Made by Cup Grinding and Lapping Process of Optical Glass BK7 in Ductile Mode
Conventional material removal of BK7 optical glass will normally result in brittle fracture at the surface, generating severe subsurface damage and poor surface finish. Subsurface damages induced by grinding strongly influence the mechanical strength and optical quality of optical glasses. However, through ductile mode grinding it is possible to reduce the surface and subsurface cracks. It is m...

متن کاملExperimental Investigation of the Surface Roughness in Grinding of BK7 Optical Glass in Brittle Mode
Surface roughness is a significant parameter which determines the efficiency of optical components. Surface damages induced by grinding strongly influence the mechanical strength and optical quality of optical glasses. It is meaningful to rapid evaluate the surface roughness through the measurement of different grinding parameters. In this study, a cup diamond wheel (D64) is used in grinding pr...

متن کاملDispersion and Nonlinearity in Ultra-Optical Ga2O3 and TiO2-Bi2O3-PbO Glass Systems
Dispersion, as the characteristic variation of refractive index with wavelength, is more pronounced, where the wavelength is approaching to the absorption band. In ultra-optical glasses, the nonlinear refractive index, concerning to the light intensity dependent phenomenon, becomes considerable. Here, two ultra-optical property glass systems; TiO2-Bi2O3-PbO (TBP...
